Deathspell Omega at number 3! Kenose should have made a show in my list too. Wasn't thinking about EPs.

IMO, it's the greatest EP in all of metal. High quality throughout, close to album-length, and none of the material appears elsewhere, plus I think the track "II" is their finest moment. It set the bar for EPs and hasn't been beaten.

In fact I edited a couple My Dying Bride albums to play at a 2x faster tempo so they wouldn't sound too slow and doomy for me.

Also agreed! I'm going to suggest that Funeral Doom would not gel well with shadowdoom9's tastes. 

Of their modern era, Viva Emptiness is my go-to. It has a bleak urban feel to it that pairs well with the crime/noir lyrical concept.

This has finally been fixed. You can now search for either Dillinger Escape Plan or The Dillinger Escape Plan (or any other format you can think of). I'm very pleased, as this has been bugging me for a while.

As well as Katatonia. They're a band I definitely need to spend more time with, I listened to The Great Cold Distance and The Fall of Hearts and really enjoyed them but never really went back.

Katatonia's discography is fairly eclectic, so there's no guarantee that you'll enjoy their early work based on your experience with their modern output. Brave Murder Day is an absolute classic though, and I'm not surprised to find it on Daniel's list as well. If you've ever heard and enjoyed Rapture's Futile, Slumber's Fallout or Enshine's Origin, then it's a no-brainer that you'll love the album that sound originated from.

My list is surprisingly recent, with 11 of the 25 being in the 2010's, which makes sense given my listening habits. Kinda neat. 

Mine is very 90s heavy. I think there would be a lot more modern releases, but I just haven't listened to recent stuff anywhere near as much as early metal. Now that Daniel and I have put the Metal Academy podcast on hold, I hope to remedy that.

Very happy to see Fallujah and Bell Witch on your list. There's two bands that I need to spend more time with.

And I forgot about Devin Townsend's Ocean Machine.

Nice! I think it would take me days to put together my top 25, so I won't attempt that now. You have a number of albums in your list that I'm a big fan of though, so I thought I'd raise my horns in agreement for 5 of them that would at least make my top 100:

Baroness - Yellow & Green (this is a heavy record and totally has metal on it, but it got left out because the primary tag is Heavy Psych on RYM.)

Coven (Detroit one) - should also fall under Guardians, they straddle Traditional Doom and Heavy Metal with some gothic/deathrock undertones

Ocean Machine - "Biomech" (1997)

One of my all-time favourite progressive metal records. Fantastic vocals, awesome production & some serious hooks that dig their teeth in really deep over repeat listens. It's interesting that the first four tracks don't really hint at the heights that Devin Townsend will take you to across the rest of the album & I find myself doubting my high opinion during the early stages of each revisit. But the three epics in the back end completely eradicate any reservations I may have had about ranking this amongst the greats of the subgenre.

I agree. I totally love this album!

That's what I call a hipster list. It ticks all the popularity boxes. Carcass, Metallica and At the Gates are (in my opinion) either way too high or not deserving of a place at all. Those bands' best years were decades ago.

Plus any best of list for the decade that doesn't include a Deathspell Omega album or The Ruins of Beverast's Exuvia makes me sad.

Hi shadowdoom9. I'm afraid it's not as clear cut as you're suggesting. Both of these albums have almost the same amount of No votes for Heavy Metal as they have Yes votes.

The criteria for a release to automatically be considered metal on Metal Academy is to have either:

1. A metal genre as its highest ratio primary genre on RYM, regardless of how high or low that ratio is
2. A metal primary genre that has a ratio of at least 2:1 (for example: 20 votes yes to 10 votes no)

If we apply that to The Wicked Symphony, you can see below that its highest ratio primary is Rock Opera (the ratio is 5:1). It does have a primary genre of Heavy Metal, but 25 votes for Yes against 22 votes for No (a ratio of 1.14:1) doesn't meet the criteria to be an automatic inclusion.

HOWEVER... I've done some investigation here and it's clear that most people agree that these albums are metal. The reason the voting has ended up the way it has is because no-one can agree whether they are Power Metal or Heavy Metal. So, I'm going to make an exception and set them both as Heavy Metal.

Please let me know exactly what you're doing when it doesn't work as desired. I've tried several different ways, but they all work.
