I'm really happy to hear that you enjoyed this one Vinny. It's one of those albums where the generally mediocre ratings it receives are just totally at odds with my own experience, so it's nice to know I'm not alone in thinking it kicks ass.

Yeah, I don't think that will ever really work. Marketing companies are only ever interested in pushing their own product (that's their job after all). The integrity of the site will always be important to me, so there'll be no signing contracts with the devil (as metal as that sounds).
I certainly don't want to dissuade Daniel from his efforts to draw in more people, but my focus will always be on improving the product. There's an audience out there and I have confidence that if we keep making Metal Academy better and more complete, then they'll eventually find their way here.
I should add that even if we never have a large community here, I'll keep doing this for my own personal enjoyment (and sanity).
I'll have to use the one release per band thing, otherwise the first two bands below would dominate too much.
OK, off the top of my head (meaning I've probably forgotten something important)...
1. Shape of Despair - Angels of Distress
2. My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
3. disEMBOWELMENT - Transcendence into the Peripheral
4. The Ruins of Beverast - Exuvia
5. Katatonia - Brave Murder Day
6. Trees of Eternity - Hour of the Nightingale
7. Saturnus - Paradise Belongs to You
8. Rapture - Futile
9. Draconian - Under a Godless Veil
10. Dolorian - Dolorian

I've fixed up the Symphony X release. I'm not sure why RYM does that sometimes. They clearly have the 1994 release listed, but the 1996 is the official date for the album. Anyway, thanks Andi!

Actually, I've just fixed the Maylene and the Sons of Disaster album. I can't believe they actually put a Sale Price sticker on the cover itself. I wasted time looking for one that didn't have it, but it looks like it's supposed to be there.
I'm happy for people to message me directly, or create an Incorrect Release Data thread in the relevant clan forum.
I'll check these releases out tomorrow and adjust accordingly.

Yeah, it's weird how some days have 20 anniversaries, whereas others have around 3.
Lucky we have a way to punish those ugly cover. Nuclear Death really didn't make any effort with their covers did they!
Congrats Xephyr. You've locked in The North!
I'm happy to see someone's still working through challenges. They were all the rage for a couple of months, then dropped off. I guess I need to figure out how to draw attention to them.
Thanks for reminding me of the frogs Xephyr. That's a couple of days of my life trying to find decent cover images for 267 releases, all of which contain either frogs or trees, that I'll never get back. By far the most difficult artist to add to the site! Buckethead have more releases (340 albums), but at least his covers are interesting.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE FROGS??? (267 releases by the way)
Quoted Xephyr
Yeah, I think bands like Phyllomedusa and Déhà are just pumping out digital music without assistance. There are an increasing amount of bands that release multiple releases a year in this fashion. I guess I was more thinking about bands that have released over a dozen full length albums through a label on CD and / or vinyl. That costs money and resources, and I just don't know how they keep convincing labels to keep doing it when they clearly haven't established a sizable fanbase.
Speaking of which, I added Thor to the site on the weekend. Sure, his 1985 album Only the Strong has 230 ratings on RYM, but the next 20 full lengths haven't surpassed 33.
This is an absolutely magnificent track! I'm happy to see that you really enjoyed discovering this underrated band. If you want to know where to go next in their discography, I'd highly recommend Cold Dark Matter from 2000. Go listen to the first track now and you'll know why I'm recommending it.

Back more on target, whatever label it's given, Epicus Doomicus is a phenomenal album, probably (along with their much later King of the Grey Islands) what got me into doom properly.
Agreed! I was extremely late in checking out Candlemass, having found my way into doom metal through English death doom (My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost and Anathema). Once I did finally check out Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, I quickly became a fan of all their 80s releases, along with their reinvigorated efforts between 2005 and 2009. In fact, I think I'll go and listen to the debut right now.
Subgenres make a lot of sense because then it’s easier for people to listen to a descendant of a main genre they generally avoid, like how I used to listen to melodeath while avoiding the standard death metal, and how I listen to doom metal while avoiding funeral doom. Indeed, one of the problems with the Epic Doom Metal label is, bands with that tag (Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, and Solstice) are much closer to standard doom metal. While the only difference is the addition of classical-sounding keyboards, more operatic singing, and fantasy lyrics to add that "epic" sound, the traditional doom sound is still dominant. In my opinion, those "epic" additions really have to be emphasized in balance with the doom sound. Here are a few gothic/death-doom songs that demonstrate what I'm talking about and hopefully my idea would catch on:
No-one's suggesting that subgenres aren't worth having. If you read my post again you'll see that I also think there should be Funeral Doom Metal and Melodic Death Metal subgenres, because a fair portion of Doom Metal and Death Metal fans will not like those styles (and vice versa). So we agree on those!
I've made no secret that I don't really like the Traditional Doom Metal descriptor, as much for the name as for the purpose.
If we go on a relevant tangent, Possessed's Seven Churches is more often than not cited as the first Death Metal album, but it contains a fair amount of it's natural predecessor, being Thrash Metal. Should we call Seven Churches a Traditional Death Metal album? Should all Death / Thrash hybrid albums be called Traditional Death Metal? No-one has ever suggested it, because there's absolutely nothing wrong with those releases being labelled both Death Metal and Thrash Metal.
Applying the above logic to Doom Metal, I see no point in labelling releases that are a mixture of Doom Metal and Heavy Metal as Traditional Doom Metal, when they could just be labelled Doom Metal and Heavy Metal.
I tend more towards Tymell's approach of not creating multitudes of subgenres when they're not particularly needed. I always come back to the same question when thinking about genres, which is "would people that really like a particular genre NOT like a particular style of it". This is obviously just my way of thinking of it, but I have to question what genres are for if not for allowing people to discover music that they will likely enjoy.
* Would a significant percentage of people that really like Death Metal NOT like what we know as Melodic Death Metal? The answer is definitely yes, so a subgenre makes sense.
* Would a significant percentage of people that really like Doom Metal NOT like what we know as Funeral Doom Metal? The answer is definitely yes, so a subgenre makes sense.
* Would a significant percentage of people that really like Doom Metal NOT like what we're calling Epic Doom Metal? I don't think the answer is yes, particularly if you're going to throw bands like Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus and Solstice into the mix. To me they epitomise what Doom Metal is.
To be clear though, this is just my opinion, and decisions around anything at Metal Academy will always be a communal process. If the community wants loads of subgenres, expanding the metal tree into increasingly small compartments, then it's all possible. Just expect some healthy challenges.
Daniel, I really should check out that Protector EP more thoroughly. The track I checked out previously a) definitely contained death metal and b) sounded pretty damn good.
Sonny, I've been listening to that Sempiternal Deathreign album this week. I liked it more than I thought I would, particularly the doom sections. I can see why you'd dig it so much. I don't think it's great as a death metal album though, so kinda wish they'd just gone all out on the doom! Certainly an interesting listen.

I think this album was very important for creating the US Depressive Black Metal scene, more specifically Xasthur and Leviathan. Xasthur even has a cover of Black Imperial Blood on his Nocturnal Poisoning album. He took so much of Mutiilation's sound when creating that album.
I don't know whether Depressive Black Metal really needs to be a subgenre, but if Xasthur is Depressive Black Metal, then this album has to be too I guess.
Welcome to Metal Academy Makntak! I hope you find some value in what we're doing here. We've definitely got some unique things going on, and I think you'll find our small (but growing) community to be friendly and passionate about metal.
We're always looking for ways to make Metal Academy even better, so don't be afraid to submit ideas or leave feedback.
Cheers,
Ben.
