Ben's Forum Replies
I'd still like to see a clan filter option on the METAL ACADEMY LISTS page as I'd like to expand it in the future & think it's already pretty cluttered.
We've discussed this previously, but I never figured out a logical way to do it. I've got two main options, but neither is ideal.
1. The clan filter dynamically looks at the releases in the lists and sets the clans accordingly. This sounds great, but then certain lists will end up with clans that aren't at all representative due to one release having it. This would be particularly noticeable with the Clan Challenges, which would all have multiple clans and not just the clan that is actually relevant for them.
2. The clan filter could be set manually when creating the list. Once again, sounds good, but what about the label lists? Every time I add new albums to them, new clans could become relevant. The only way I can see it working is if I just set every clan on lists that could potentially cover more than one, but then that takes away from the value and could actually be confusing.
Thoughts?
I've sent an email to the new Dani to see if he also created the other account.

Do the email addresses give it away?
Not in this case.
I've locked in my developer for some time in July, so that gives me plenty of time to played around with designs for new functionality. Please keep the ideas coming!
I've sent an email to the new Dani to see if he also created the other account.
I'll also see about making it so that two accounts can't have the same name.

I just love that album cover! Beyond that, I really should give Converge a solid go sometime, despite my general aversion to Revolution releases. What's the worst that could happen?
Thanks for the responses so far. I'd like to play devil's advocate to make sure we make the right decision.
While I'd like to agree with SilentScream213's comment that "an album cover can be liked or disliked by anyone completely regardless to their taste in music", I'm just not convinced that it would play out that way. The artwork is very different across some of the genres for a reason. Metal fans that love a certain style of music are for the most part attracted to the style of artwork that goes with it.
Case in point...
If I'm a huge fan of power metal, but REALLY don't like death metal, I'm probably not going to think very highly of the artwork found on the majority of death metal releases. Let's go with a really well-known cover like Cannibal Corpse's Tomb of the Mutilated. There will undoubtedly be death metal fans that rate that cover 5 out of 5 and think it's awesome, but how many site users that aren't into the more extreme genres of metal would consider it to be a good cover? The same logic could be applied the other way. How do you think those same death metal fans will rate the cover of power metal albums like Twilight Force's Heroes of Mighty Magic?
Of course there is one other option: I implement a Site Rating and Clan Rating for album covers, the same way I did for releases. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure you'll all agree with that idea.

I haven't heard this album yet, but I'll def check it out sometime. My previous experience with Falkenbach resulted in one of the most enjoyable reviews that I've written, which I entitled En Their Medh Riki Fara or: How I Learned to Stop Being Elitist and Love Viking Metal. You can read it here if you care to: https://metal.academy/reviews/966/3952
Ministry for sure. Fell in love with it immediately back in 1992 and knew that there was only one thing that I could do. Ding a ding dang my dang a long ling long!
Ministry 2
NIN 0
Incubus' Serpent Temptation (1988)
Given I'd never given this band a go previously, I have to say that I'm stunned at how great this is. Ripping thrash metal with lots of great riffs and blast beats. I can understand why it's often listed as death metal due to its intensity, but the vast majority of the riffs are pure thrash. If it wasn't for the somewhat lacking vocals, this could rate even higher than the 4 stars I'm giving it. If you're into the more intense side of thrash (think Morbid Saint and early Kreator and Sadus), then you owe it to yourself to check this album out.
4 out of 5 stars!

Ben, I notice you haven't rated this one. Can I assume that you're already all over it?
Yep. I consider myself a fan of the most recent two albums by Mgla, but all the listening so far has been while doing other things (such as adding albums to Metal Academy). I really need to sit down and focus on them before giving them a rating.
The Metal Academy acknowledges that you have locked in your original three clans, before passing an additional clan challenge. We hereby state on behalf of The Fallen that you have been accepted into their ranks. They asked me to relay the immense melancholy and despondency that this achievement has provided.
Congratulations shadowdoom9! Massive effort.

Should be easy to implement. I'll try to give it a title such as Most Active Contributors as opposed to Clan Legends or something like that.
In fact, thinking about it, maybe "patches" would be a better concept for a metal site than medals.
I like it. I'll come up with a concept and we can discuss as a community before implementing.
Hi Ben, do you think it is possible that when you search by release it would be possible to list all releases in a clan with no ratings or reviews. I ask because one thing I do like on metal-archives is their "review albums with no reviews" challenge. Due to the newness of Metal Academy it has a large proportion of unrated and unreviewed albums, so maybe something along those lines could be introduced, otherwise there is a danger that the only albums with enough ratings to register on the charts will be those on the clan challenges. Personally I have decided to try to rate as many of the Fallen doom, sludge, stoner and drone releases as I can (I'll leave the gothic stuff to someone else!) It's just a thought...
I'll look into this one too. Hopefully not too hard.
Any chance of some "like" mechanism being available in the forums as well as on the reviews?
There's already a Like mechanism on reviews. Note that you can only Like a review if you are part of one of the Release's clans. The order that reviews show up on a Release page is dependant on how many Likes it has.
I can look into adding a Like option in the forum.

It appears to me, with the exception of vandalize, that the visitors to the site who have only selected one clan then register no further activity. This suggests one of two things, either they are just surfing and had a quick look at the site then decided it wasn't for them, or inadvertently selected only one clan, became frustrated and then left it.
I don't know which it is, but the actual registration process seems straightforward to me so I'm guessing it is more likely to be the former, in which case there's very little you could do about that.
If someone has registered less than three clans can they register further clans later? For example if they are new to metal and only have a limited experience of the music, joining a cool-looking site of well-informed enthusiasts to enlist help in order to expand their metal horizons. (I'm aware not everyone on the internet is an old bastard like me!)
I'm thinking that I might disable accounts that haven't contributed anything after a certain period of time. I'll reach out to them first and encourage them to come back or provide feedback on their experience, but if I get no response them I'll just disable them.
I originally developed the site so that members could chop and change their clans whenever they wanted to, but I quickly realised that people might abuse that ability. I also realised that once a fourth clan was introduced, if someone tried to change their clans, they'd lose the fourth one. It's now locked so only admins can do it, so if anyone wants to add more clans (because they only selected 1 or 2) or change the ones they selected, they just need to ask me to do it. If a long time member wants to change a clan, then as long as I can see that it's a clan they actually enjoy, then I'll do it.
I've attempted previously to make it so you have to select three clans to be able to proceed, but wasn't able to do it. It pretty clearly states to select 3 clans when registering, but obviously it's not clear enough for a lot of people. Either that or they're intentionally only selecting one.
I should also point out that I attempt to contact every single member that joins the site with less than three clans. I think about two of them have ever responded with additional clans. Of the ones in the image shadowdoom posted above, literally none of them have responded.
It's also worth noting that it could be people registering just to see what happens, and that don't actually have any intention of being active. vandalize is a bit of an anomaly, in that he/she have posted reviews, yet never responded to my questions around adding two more clans.
Anyway, I guess I can put a message below the clan selection saying something like "REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN SELECT 3 CLANS!" Anyone got a better idea?

The new E.P. from Maryland's finest frog-themed gorenoise exponent Phyllomedusa was released last week. It's entitled "0% Survival Rate".
You want me to hate you don't you.
Personally, I'm very proud of what we already have here. I kind of gave up on having an enormous community a long time ago, and have instead focused on making the site as good and as complete as it can be. I really enjoy adding bands, releases and lists, and I figure if I still find value in the site (which I do), then there are bound to be others that also do.
There are still a few things that I'd like to do to make Metal Academy even better, but they are incredibly time consuming tasks, so I'd need help. These include adding tracklists, subgenres and perhaps even lyrics. I'm sure there are more unique things we could do with the clans, so I'm thinking that might be the place to focus to further differentiate the site.
I've considered encouraging a points system for activity, but haven't really seen that lead to anything interesting on other sites. If anything, members that have grand titles tend to treat newcomers like peasants, and I always want to encourage respect and equality. I agree that the community here is very friendly and accepting so far, and that's something I will always want to have. If it has to remain relatively small for that to be the case, then that's fine.
I'm considering working with my developer in the next few months, so if anyone has anything they think could improve Metal Academy, please speak up. I'm not sure that there has been anything that anyone has requested so far that I haven't implemented or at least considered very carefully.
Oh, one other thing...while it's not visible yet, I've been adding release dates to every release on the site for the past year or so, and have slowly been going back to all the early releases and adding them. As with album covers, I've been scouring many sources to find the most accurate dates, and will bring them into play in some fashion at some point. To give you some insight into the backend of the site, the following releases have an anniversary today...
I'll add them soon. As for the Sludge challenge, stay tuned. I'm going to star working on it this week.
I may not consider Metal Church's debut to be a classic, but I do think it's a really enjoyable and often exciting album. There are a number of great tracks like Beyond the Black, Gods of Wrath and the awesome title track. If it wasn't for a lacklustre B side (including the cover, which like just about every cover ever recorded, doesn't fit with the rest of the album), I'd give this album 4.5 stars. As it is, is a solid 4 stars for me.

It has been a while! I actually attempted to make a Viking Metal one a while back, but was shocked to find that there really aren't enough quality albums to do it. There are very few Viking Metal releases than don't have a more dominant primary such as Black Metal or Folk Metal. I'm pretty sure that will be the case for Neoclassical Metal and Trance Metal too, but I can definitely make one for Sludge and Post.
The question is...what do I do with Atmospheric Sludge?! I'm thinking that it will lock in The Infinite rather than The Fallen as both Daniel and I agree that Atmospheric Sludge is more Post-Metal than it is Sludge Metal. Anyone have an opinion on that?
And since I just mentioned them in the last post, this is the debut album from Seattle based Izthmi. Much more traditional black metal tones, while still digging into that epic atmospheric songwriting and timbre. Ben, I think you'll really enjoy this.

Just checked out the first couple of tracks. There are a lot of influences here, including Agalloch, the progressive stylings of Opeth / In Mourning, and I can definitely hear a bit of the Scandinavian doom sound that I love so much in bands like Rapture and Slumber. I think it's going to take a bit of time for this one to sink in.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Welcome to Metal Academy Chris! I was particularly stoked to see that you chose The Sphere when registering, as it's definitely an under-represented clan.
You've definitely come to the right place if you enjoy splitting metal hairs. You won't find two more pedantic metal fans than Daniel and I, but then you'd know that if you've listened to the podcast.
I hope you continue to find value in the site and keep adding reviews. I'm really enjoying them.
Cheers,
Ben.

I'm not the best person to judge an album like this one, as I struggle with crossover thrash in general. I also struggle with humour in my metal, although for some reason Mr Bungle is an exclusion to that statement. I find all the silliness in SOD to be immature and a distraction from the admittedly good riffs that pop up throughout. I rated it 2.5 stars on RYM when I last paid it any attention, but I see that was 12 years ago!
I may have to check this one out, especially as even Daniel likes it!

There's an obvious flaw in your system shadowdoom9, and that's your Katatonia score. You've included all of their Alternative Metal albums in that score, none of which you seemed to enjoy. If you only included the gothic / doom metal albums, your average score would have been 4.25.
I don't suppose you included ratings for all the Anathema and The Gathering albums that don't meet the criteria to be included on the site, so it's only fair that you compare apples with apples.
Ben, please add Phyllomedusa (USA).

You play My Dying Bride at 1.5 speed? Please reconsider joining The Fallen!
I do enjoy Type O Negative, but My Dying Bride are one of my favourite bands. The Light at the End of the World was their return to death doom after some years of experimentation, and while it wasn't the five star classic I was hoping for, it's still a great album with some truly monstrous tracks. It's My Dying Bride for me!

If any of you are thinking of bands that started as gothic death-doom but slowly (d)evolved into alt-prog rock, here are a couple of them; Anathema and The Gathering. While both of these bands disappoint heavier fans by not having their darker metal sound anymore, you know who might like their lighter rock sound? MY MOM!! Seriously, my mom's never really a fan of metal, but she's OK with softer rock sounds.
Unlike Daniel, I stopped really enjoying Anathema's work quite some time ago. I've always had time for The Gathering though, at least I did while Anneke was still part of the band. I think I listen to their non-metal albums more than the metal ones, simply because they can be played while the family is around.
Ulver are another one that springs to mind. They've made a reasonably good fist of all of their undertakings although I have to admit that I don't truly love anything I've heard from them since their metal days.
I can't say I like everything they've done, but occasionally they still create releases that really work for me. I've a huge fan of Perdition City and A Quick Fix of Melancholy in particular.

Good topic! I'll have a think about this one, but my immediate reaction is to talk about Burzum. Sure, Varg's initial transition from black metal to dungeon synth was forced, due to his incarceration, but he's ended up moving on from metal anyway. I find all of his non-metal releases to be fairly unlistenable. They swing between utterly boring and grating on the senses, with only the occasional hint of the genius that produced such incredible albums in the mid-nineties.
On a side note, isn't the new Oranssi Pazuzu still metal though? I see that most people would select Psychedelic Metal if it were indeed a thing. Who knows, it may become a thing after the band's success.
