If we've got the clan genres right (and I personally think we have), then it’s my belief that the system should allow people to join whatever clans they feel most affiliated with and rate/review whatever they want to across the site. In the long run, the system automatically corrects for Academy attendees downrating releases in clans they don't belong to, while sheer numbers should counter the odd Academy attendee that downrates releases in their own clan(s).

Absolute classic death metal album! Excellent choice. :+1:

July 13, 2020 12:58 PM

I think we both pretty much said the same thing at the same time Xephyr. I know where Daniel's coming from, as he made the decision to leave The North due to his low ratings for Folk Metal releases having an impact on the Clan Ratings. I did point out that he had an alternate path though, which was to simply stop reviewing Folk Metal releases when he clearly doesn't like them. I can't say I understand why anyone would want to purposely and repeatedly subject themselves to subgenres that they know they're going to despise, but he seems to be a sucker for punishment.

I look forward to his retort.

July 13, 2020 12:44 PM

Thanks for the suggestion Andi, but I'm pretty happy with how things are now. I'll probably make lists for some (possibly even all) of the subgenres at some point, but I think the clan challenges should remain as they are. If anyone finds completing a challenge to be a "nightmare", as you found when doing the Death Metal challenge for The Horde, then they may want to reconsider whether it's the right clan for them. At the very least they should consider whether it's the right challenge to be attempting.

I'd also like to state that while I agree with a lot of Daniel's comments above, I don't agree with this one:

"I never intended for people that don't like classic death metal to join The Horde, for people that don't like doom metal to join The Fallen or for people that don't like black metal to join The North, etc."

When I designed the system, I simply wanted members to join the clans that they feel most affiliated with. If someone is passionate about Folk Metal, but cares nothing for Black Metal, then they should still consider joining The North. There's no reason why they have to listen to or rate/review Black Metal albums to be part of that clan. In fact, I don't like to think of each clan as having major and minor genres. In most cases there's a genre that's more popular than the others, but that shouldn't lessen the other genre's positions.

Where things became more complicated for you was when you joined The Horde, despite not feeling comfortable affiliating yourself with either of it's two top level genres. If the Death Metal challenge made you reconsider your clan selection, then I think you were right to do so.

Regarding single track albums, I seriously considered including Edge of Sanity's Crimson, but it did feel a bit like cheating.

@MacabreEternal, I originally had Procession of the Dead Clowns, but for some reason it felt odd to have an entirely instrumental track as one of my top 10 tracks. On hindsight, I should have left it as it was. Lifechanging track!

It was always part of my Angel and the Dark River experience, as I owned the digipak version from day one. Yes, it was out of place on that album, but it was also the best thing about it (and that's not a criticism, I love the rest of the album). Incredible track!

Man, this is seriously difficult... here's a first attempt, although I admit I've never made a best song list before.

In no particular order...

My Dying Bride – The Sexuality of Bereavement

Blut aus Nord – Our Blessed Frozen Cells

Burzum – Det som en gang var

Carcass – Incarnated Solvent Abuse

Opeth – Bleak

Disembowelment – Cerulean Transience of All My Imagined Shores

Shape of Despair - ...To Live for My Death...

Morbid Angel – Fall from Grace

Slayer – Raining Blood

The Ruins of Beverast – Takitum Tootem (Trance)

That's some scathing commentary there Xephyr. Very enjoyable indeed!

I think I would have a similar response to it, so I won't even bother with this one.

This release has been added to the Hall of Judgement.

June 25, 2020 03:22 AM

This release has been added to the Hall of Judgement. Just for the record, I personally feel that Ben & Jerry's is more black metal than Sonny92 realises.

June 25, 2020 02:17 AM

This release has been added to the Hall of Judgement.

To be clear, my comments were only in relation to the Challenge lists, and not whether Atmospheric Sludge releases should be linked to both The Infinite and The Fallen. I'm pretty comfortable that releases that are correctly categorised as Atmospheric Sludge should be attached to both clans.

So to achieve what you're requesting, you'd need to The Ocean's albums to have the Atmospheric Sludge genre removed, and to have the Post-Metal genre instead. Is that what you're asking for?

This release has been added to the Hall of Judgement.

An amazing album and an important one in my metal journey. I'll never forget that Daniel played me two tracks off the album (from memory they were Celestial Voyage and Uroboric Forms) that he'd recorded off a metal show on the radio. I immediately fell in love with them and desperately wanted to get my hands on the album (no easy feat back in the non-internet days). Literally a few days later our dad called from a second hand book store that also had a small CD section. He always called us if he found something that looked metal, in case it was something that we wanted. To my utter surprise, he was holding Cynic's Focus, which someone had bought and sold presumably after a single listen. Their loss!!!!

I thought I'd do something interesting and list the albums I'm both thrilled and surprised to see on your list. Note that being surprised doesn't mean that I think you're wrong. It's your list after all!

Nice list Sonny! It's great to see such a diverse list, with everything from Sabbath to Winter to Terrorizer.

June 20, 2020 05:25 AM

Much harder to add functionality like that to specific lists rather than all lists.

June 20, 2020 05:09 AM

I'll go with option 2 unless someone can come up with "a cunning plan that cannot fail".

June 19, 2020 11:50 PM

I'd still like to see a clan filter option on the METAL ACADEMY LISTS page as I'd like to expand it in the future & think it's already pretty cluttered.

Quoted Daniel

We've discussed this previously, but I never figured out a logical way to do it. I've got two main options, but neither is ideal.

1. The clan filter dynamically looks at the releases in the lists and sets the clans accordingly. This sounds great, but then certain lists will end up with clans that aren't at all representative due to one release having it. This would be particularly noticeable with the Clan Challenges, which would all have multiple clans and not just the clan that is actually relevant for them.

2. The clan filter could be set manually when creating the list. Once again, sounds good, but what about the label lists? Every time I add new albums to them, new clans could become relevant. The only way I can see it working is if I just set every clan on lists that could potentially cover more than one, but then that takes away from the value and could actually be confusing.

Thoughts?

I've sent an email to the new Dani to see if he also created the other account.

Quoted Ben

Do the email addresses give it away?

Quoted Daniel

Not in this case.

June 18, 2020 06:33 AM

I've locked in my developer for some time in July, so that gives me plenty of time to played around with designs for new functionality. Please keep the ideas coming!

June 18, 2020 06:32 AM

I've sent an email to the new Dani to see if he also created the other account.

I'll also see about making it so that two accounts can't have the same name.

I just love that album cover! Beyond that, I really should give Converge a solid go sometime, despite my general aversion to Revolution releases. What's the worst that could happen?

June 16, 2020 02:54 AM

Thanks for the responses so far. I'd like to play devil's advocate to make sure we make the right decision.

While I'd like to agree with SilentScream213's comment that "an album cover can be liked or disliked by anyone completely regardless to their taste in music", I'm just not convinced that it would play out that way. The artwork is very different across some of the genres for a reason. Metal fans that love a certain style of music are for the most part attracted to the style of artwork that goes with it.

Case in point...

If I'm a huge fan of power metal, but REALLY don't like death metal, I'm probably not going to think very highly of the artwork found on the majority of death metal releases. Let's go with a really well-known cover like Cannibal Corpse's Tomb of the Mutilated. There will undoubtedly be death metal fans that rate that cover 5 out of 5 and think it's awesome, but how many site users that aren't into the more extreme genres of metal would consider it to be a good cover? The same logic could be applied the other way. How do you think those same death metal fans will rate the cover of power metal albums like Twilight Force's Heroes of Mighty Magic?

Of course there is one other option: I implement a Site Rating and Clan Rating for album covers, the same way I did for releases. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure you'll all agree with that idea.

Ministry for sure. Fell in love with it immediately back in 1992 and knew that there was only one thing that I could do. Ding a ding dang my dang a long ling long! :smirk:

Ministry 2

NIN 0

Incubus' Serpent Temptation (1988)

Given I'd never given this band a go previously, I have to say that I'm stunned at how great this is. Ripping thrash metal with lots of great riffs and blast beats. I can understand why it's often listed as death metal due to its intensity, but the vast majority of the riffs are pure thrash. If it wasn't for the somewhat lacking vocals, this could rate even higher than the 4 stars I'm giving it. If you're into the more intense side of thrash (think Morbid Saint and early Kreator and Sadus), then you owe it to yourself to check this album out.

4 out of 5 stars!

Quoted Daniel

Yep. I consider myself a fan of the most recent two albums by Mgla, but all the listening so far has been while doing other things (such as adding albums to Metal Academy). I really need to sit down and focus on them before giving them a rating.

June 04, 2020 08:56 PM

The Metal Academy acknowledges that you have locked in your original three clans, before passing an additional clan challenge. We hereby state on behalf of The Fallen that you have been accepted into their ranks. They asked me to relay the immense melancholy and despondency that this achievement has provided.

Congratulations shadowdoom9! Massive effort.

Should be easy to implement. I'll try to give it a title such as Most Active Contributors as opposed to Clan Legends or something like that.

May 27, 2020 04:17 AM

In fact, thinking about it, maybe "patches" would be a better concept for a metal site than medals.

Quoted Sonny92

I like it. I'll come up with a concept and we can discuss as a community before implementing.

May 27, 2020 01:43 AM

Hi Ben, do you think it is possible that when you search by release it would be possible to list all releases in a clan with no ratings or reviews. I ask because one thing I do like on metal-archives is their "review albums with no reviews" challenge. Due to the newness of Metal Academy it has a large proportion of unrated and unreviewed albums, so maybe something along those lines could be introduced, otherwise there is a danger that the only albums with enough ratings to register on the charts will be those on the clan challenges. Personally I have decided to try to rate as many of the Fallen doom, sludge, stoner and drone releases as I can (I'll leave the gothic stuff to someone else!) It's just a thought...

Quoted Sonny92

I'll look into this one too. Hopefully not too hard.

May 27, 2020 01:41 AM

Any chance of some "like" mechanism being available in the forums as well as on the reviews?

Quoted MacabreEternal

There's already a Like mechanism on reviews. Note that you can only Like a review if you are part of one of the Release's clans. The order that reviews show up on a Release page is dependant on how many Likes it has.

I can look into adding a Like option in the forum.

It appears to me, with the exception of vandalize, that the visitors to the site who have only selected one clan then register no further activity. This suggests one of two things, either they are just surfing and had a quick look at the site then decided it wasn't for them, or inadvertently selected only one clan, became frustrated and then left it.

I don't know which it is, but the actual registration process seems straightforward to me so I'm guessing it is more likely to be the former, in which case there's very little you could do about that.

If someone has registered less than three clans can they register further clans later? For example if they are new to metal and only have a limited experience of the music, joining a cool-looking site of well-informed enthusiasts to enlist help in order to expand their metal horizons. (I'm aware not everyone on the internet is an old bastard like me!)

Quoted Sonny92

I'm thinking that I might disable accounts that haven't contributed anything after a certain period of time. I'll reach out to them first and encourage them to come back or provide feedback on their experience, but if I get no response them I'll just disable them.

I originally developed the site so that members could chop and change their clans whenever they wanted to, but I quickly realised that people might abuse that ability. I also realised that once a fourth clan was introduced, if someone tried to change their clans, they'd lose the fourth one. It's now locked so only admins can do it, so if anyone wants to add more clans (because they only selected 1 or 2) or change the ones they selected, they just need to ask me to do it. If a long time member wants to change a clan, then as long as I can see that it's a clan they actually enjoy, then I'll do it.

I've attempted previously to make it so you have to select three clans to be able to proceed, but wasn't able to do it. It pretty clearly states to select 3 clans when registering, but obviously it's not clear enough for a lot of people. Either that or they're intentionally only selecting one.

I should also point out that I attempt to contact every single member that joins the site with less than three clans. I think about two of them have ever responded with additional clans. Of the ones in the image shadowdoom posted above, literally none of them have responded.

It's also worth noting that it could be people registering just to see what happens, and that don't actually have any intention of being active. vandalize is a bit of an anomaly, in that he/she have posted reviews, yet never responded to my questions around adding two more clans.

Anyway, I guess I can put a message below the clan selection saying something like "REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN SELECT 3 CLANS!" Anyone got a better idea?
