I cannot say that I am at all surprised by the entitlement of these kinds of people on the internet.

Music is completely subjective and value can be found in anything. Some people are born with a knack for songwriting, some people are born with hateful views towards their fellow man. These two are not mutually exclusive.

Ben clearly falls into a large category of people who like Filosofem for it's songwriting, atmosphere among other things and that is okay! And Ben has also mentioned in his review that Varg is a reprehensible human being and that his admiration for the album has nothing to do with the writer's hateful opinions. But in the eyes of some, you have to pick one; you cannot speak out of both sides of your mouth lest you be labeled just at hateful as the artist in question.

I can see that Ben won't let this delusional take get to him and will continue to listen to albums like Filosofem despite the controversy. And it's honestly the right course of action to take. Good music is good music no matter who is making it; art and artist can be separated, but that sentiment is becoming less frequent by the day it seems.

P.S. these are the same people that hate on social media like Meta (Facebook) and X (Twitter) and their directors, while continuing to scroll and post on the platform every single day.

Upon Stone - To Seek and Follow the Call of Lions (2024)

February 07, 2025 05:15 PM

Upon Stone - Dead Mother Moon

If you want to hear some melodic death metal nostalgia then I highly suggest checking out the debut album from L.A.'s Upon Stone. It really sounds like a record that takes Scandinavian death metal and doesn't bog it down with tired melodic metalcore trends. It is flawed, but does have its moments from time to time.

3/5

Jinjer - Duél

On the same day that Dream Theater release their newest album, Ukranian's Jinjer return with their fifth studio album Duél. I have no idea what to expect from this since...well a lot has happened in the bands home and native land since 2021's Wallflowers

Download/stream the album here:
https://jinjer-jinjer.bandcamp.com/album/du-l

Okay so full disclosure, I am not the target audience for albums like this. Violence Inherent in the System is a technical death metal album that borrows heavily from the classic 1990s sounds of Cryptopsy and Dying Fetus, while I prefer the more progressive side of the sound; think The Sound of Perseverance Death or Edge of Sanity. That said, Noxis have bred a sound here that is unique to them; it does not sound like a formless imitation of those bands and instead brings them into the modern age. That modern age being some Imperial Triumphant-esque avant-garde tendencies/techniques that threw me off guard in the nicest way possible. This is a solid debut release and I sure look forward to hear if they can grow this sound through the second half of the decade and beyond.

4/5

I've been keeping track of all of my albums that I review for a number of years now as well. Annually I will make a new file to compile all the albums I review during a year and place them in order based on my personal enjoyment. It has always been for ease of access sake; I do not have the time to relentlessly revisit older records throughout the year when I'm always being bombarded with new material. That way, when the end of the year comes, I simply place those records in the top positions on my year end list. It also leaves time for slight adjustments based on the albums I did return to the most.

If you plan on doing anything greater than a specific qualification (i.e. best of decade, greatest *insert genre here* albums), I suggest keeping multiple in documents in case one gets corrupted.

Here's my nomination for March Vinny:

Megadeth - Lucretia (1990)

Megadeth - Rust in Peace

A fairly underground thrash metal band from the 1990s that didn't get a lot of recognition back in the day and it sure is timely wouldn't you say? This record has everything you would expect out of a 1990s thrash clone band; a complete disregard for melody, a hodgepodge of hit-or-miss riffs, and a seemingly endless assault of guitar solo wanking. At least the album is produced well and that bass REALLY does some heavy lifting to make these tunes sound huge.

Wait, this is guy who got kicked out of Metallica? No wonder.

Gaerea - Coma

Polish black metal (dubious) band Gaerea gave me a lot to think about when it came to what this album should be categorized as. It's a far cry from anything related to the original source material, but it does have some open ended tremolo guitar and pummeling blast beats. At times it did remind me of some of the atmospheric black metal records from bands like Summoning and Saor. But the lower guttural vocals and post-metal interludes leave this feeling more like progressive death metal.

Not that this is a bad thing. The record sounds gorgeous and leaves me feeling uplifted when I hear it. However, it runs out of ideas pretty quickly and can be a slog to finish. But this style of death/black metal crossover project is rare as far as I can tell, so I'm willing to overlook it due to a lack of saturation.

Deathwhite - Grey Everlasting

Pittsburgh doom/gothic metallers Deathwhite 2022 album seems like a little change of pace from the bands previous two albums. It's taken the Katatonia vibes of the first two albums and slowed it down to sound more like traditional doom metal. Alas, I was never the biggest fan of Katatonia's doom metal sound so I found the record to be rather simplistic and tedious. Perhaps some other well versed Fallen members will enjoy this more.

The Black Dahlia Murder - Servitude

The Black Dahlia Murder are the melo-death band that got popular with metalcore scene kids during the 2000s with appearances on main stages of Mayhem Festival alongside Job For a Cowboy and Whitechapel. The bands 2010s material is not earth shattering, but it is consistent; solid melodic songwriting, tight production and grooves, and minimal self indulgence. This is the first album by the band since the passing of their previous frontman, Trevor Strnad, and it feels like nothing has changed for the band. Some might view this as stagnation, which I can agree with to an extent, but when the songwriting is as good as it is here, you can almost overlook it for a moment.

3.5/5

Only one Revolution album received 4 star honors from me this year, and that was Allt's From the New World. I did like records from Ingested, Better Lovers and Weston Super Maim though.

Imminence's The Black was okay, but lacking songwriting from Heaven in Hiding. I hear that The Reclamation of I is better so I'll be giving that a listen very soon.

Likely AOTY winner You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To plays a style of beatdown metalcore that I am not a fan of and spent much of the year as the old man yelling at clouds as Knocked Loose were headlining festivals, performing on late night TV and getting promoted on every metal forum I frequent. Perhaps it is a style that I will never truly appreciate, but one more person listening to Knocked Loose is one less person listening to Five Finger Death Punch, so it can't be all bad right?

My three favourite thrash albums of 2024 were all hybrid records with the Horde: Dissimulator, Sovereign, and Hemotoxin. Everything else was painfully average or forgettable, with Critical Defiance being a massive letdown after No Life Forms.

Besides Xephyr's featured albums of 2024, my North visits were not very long. I liked almost all of the records mentioned above, with Æthĕrĭa Conscĭentĭa being my favourite.

Thy Catafalque's A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek is a wonderful release although it is categorized as folk metal and much lacking in anything dark. The only other record worth consideration is Saidan's Visual Kill. Their style of black metal is very melodic, uplifting and very inspired by Deafheaven so I advise caution to the more traditional black metal fans.

2024 was not a superb year for my Gateway clan. Many of the years most popular albums fell nicely into the alternative metalcore sound which continues to grow remarkably stale. Even my beloved Poppy has given up on her synthpop roots of the late 2010s in favor of more mainstream metalcore tones. Her best showing of the year was actually on the Knocked Loose album if I'm being honest.

I hated Falling in Reverse's new album.

Other recommendations from the year would likely be Reliqa's Secrets of the Future and Vended's self titled debut.

Cannot say that I disagree with any of the albums included here Daniel.

Full of Hell's Coagulated Bliss was the type of grindcore album that moved me with its density and heavy songwriting focus; one of the best grindcore albums in years.

Black Dahlia Murder released a solid melodic death comeback following the tragic passing of their former vocalist.

While early technical death albums by Apogean (Cyberstrictive) and Hideous Divinity (Unextinct) stayed surprisingly active in my playlists all year.

The Infinite was saved in the eleventh hour from having a very underwhelming 2024 with the newest albums from Thy Catafalque (A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek) and Klone (The Unseen).

Otherwise, Anciients' Beyond the Reach of the Sun and Dvne's Voidkind were great releases by "newer" groups, while old guard like Ihsahn and Caligula's Horse returned with solid returns-to-form as well.

I know I'm likely not the most cultured when it comes to Fallen album releases in 2024, but The Flight of Sleipnir album alluded to by Sonny was a solid release.

My year end catchup also introduced me to fantastic releases by Grey Skies Fallen (Molded by Broken Hands) and Counting Hours (The Wishing Tomb).

And of course, I would be remised to not include the stunning Pallbearer album, Mind Burns Alive.

I can say with the utmost confidence that my appreciation for alternative styles of metal have grown a lot since joining the Metal Academy. Reading back on my earliest extreme metal album reviews, I realize just how sheltered I was; I was unable to appreciate those styles of music due to 1. my age (lol) and 2. the sheer amount of content that was readily available. Spending most of my time with progressive metal, all of this in hindsight must sound like I'm not really appreciating my own genre specialty, but now that I can listen to black/death metal and "core" genres with a new perspective, the quality of those genres opens itself up. Bands like Spectral Wound and Ulcerate, whom I never would have dreamed of listening to "for fun" five years ago, are now regular listening when I want to hear some pummeling metal.

One thing that I would like to change in 2025 is to revisit the dreaded thrash metal. I know I've been delaying this return long enough, especially since 2024's output of Pit releases that I heard (which was very limited) wasn't very strong. But now with a foundation that has been set in place, I know where do start looking. From South America, to the blackened thrash variety, these were styles found through Metal Academy and I couldn't be more thankful.

December 01, 2024 03:49 AM

Well 2024 is almost in the rearview and it's about that time that we enter into the new year ass first and look to see what stood out among the rest in metal music in the previous year. As a outsider to the Fallen clan, it is both baffling and disappointing that I have become so detached from the music that is being shared with everyone else's year end lists.

1. Pallbearer - Mind Burns Alive

2. Civerous - Maze Envy

3. Big Brave - A Chaos of Flowers

4. High on Fire - Cometh the Storm

5. Crypt Sermon - The Stygian Rose

6. Thou - Umbilical

7. Officuim Triste - Hortus venenum

Now do keep in mind that of the Fallen style music that I frequent, sludge and death doom metal are my go to's instead of the traditional doom metal style. That said, the number of people sleeping on Pallbearer in 2024 is surprising. After I started working full time again in September, I've run low on time to visit clans outside of my own, but my DM's are always open for recommendations.

December 01, 2024 03:37 AM

Well 2024 is almost in the rearview and it's about that time that we enter into the new year ass first and look to see what stood out among the rest in metal music in the previous year. As a distinguished member of the Infinite clan, putting this list together is always the most challenging. It's the one with the most reviews of any clan during the year, but with so many crossover's the ones that truly belong in the Infinite list might be surprising. If there are any albums that seem like obvious omissions, check those albums other clan leaning and you'll likely find that album there. As for the Infinite exclusively:

1. Klone - The Unseen

2. Thy Catafalque - XII: A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek

3. Anciients - Beyond the Reach of the Sun

4. Ihsahn - Ihsahn

5. Dvne - Voidkind

6. Calligula's Horse - Charcoal Grace

7.. Opeth - The Last Will and Testament

8. Locrian - End Terrain

9. Intervals - Memory Palace

10. Wheel - Charismatic Leaders

The last month of the year has been insane with Opeth, Thy Catafalque and Klone bullying their way to the top of the chart. There wasn't that much bad progressive metal that I heard in 2024, but a bunch of it turned forgettable in one way or another. With lackluster returns by Oceans of Slumber and Alcest, a new crop can spring forth into the top ten. I really need to listen to that Cave Sermon album don't I Xephyr?

December 01, 2024 03:22 AM

Well 2024 is almost in the rearview and it's about that time that we enter into the new year ass first and look to see what stood out among the rest in metal music in the previous year. As a distinguished member of the Gateway clan, it might come as a surprise that it is also one of my most frustrating listens on a yearly basis. But whose to say we cannot rustle some feathers? So here's my list:

1. Reliqa - Secrets of the Future

2. Poppy - Negative Spaces

3. Devin Townsend - PowerNerd

4. Northlane - Mirror's Edge

5. Slope - Freak Dreams

6. Pain - I Am

7. Graphic Nature - Who Are You When No One Is Watching?

8. Blanket - Ceremonia

9. Imminence - The Black

10. Vended - Vended

Just a top 10 obviously because there were quite a few records that don't deserve mention in this conversation. Alternative metalcore dominates this list once again, but bands like Reliqa, Vended and Graphic Nature are bringing nu metal back.

November 2024

1. Abrahma – Omens Pt. 1 (2015)

2. Alice In Chains – Angry Chair (1992)

There really isn't THAT much more music than in a pre-streaming world. The major difference is the endless number ways for people to publish their music.

Gone are the days where you had to be on a major record label (Universal, Warner, EMI, etc.) in order for your music to be heard on a inter/national scale. Now you can just upload a video to YouTube and before you know it, you'll be famous for fifteen minutes. Unlike Vinny, I still keep up to date with modern releases, but on a vastly smaller scale than I did five years ago. Listening to new music for its own sake just to find out it isn't very good did a huge number on my mental health and I wondered if I should retire from music reviewing.

For me, keeping up with the times is essential to know what the kids find "hip," even if I don't like it, and then try assisting them towards similar sounding music from the present or past that they may have never heard before. And as a musician myself, having a finger on the trigger ensures that I have steady work.

Mother of Millions - Magna Mater

The Greek alternative/progressive metal band Mother of Millions released their fourth studio album this past Friday.

Allt - From The New World

Thall. That should be enough of a descriptor if you ask me, but if you crave more substance, this is the debut full length album from Sweden's metalcore outlet and has been making waves lately, or maybe that's just the warble of the breakdowns.

Nightwish - Yesterwynde

Today is the release day for one of the symphonic metal giants in Nightwish and their tenth (10) studio album. Double digit albums typically means legacy territory, but let's see if Nightwish still has some gas in the tank.
