Any suggestions for September Ben?
Any suggestions for September Ben?
When I first discovered Funeral Doom Metal in the early 2000s, I instantly fell in love with it. As is my tendency for any new discovery, I immediately threw myself into it and listened to pretty much every example of the genre to that point. There were some incredible finds (Shape of Despair, Esoteric, Skepticism etc.), but there were quite a few amateurish failed attempts too.
Then there was Until Death Overtakes Me's album Prelude to Monolith. This is a release for which the ingredients are not of a high quality, but the end result is somehow hypnotic and captivating. I go back to it every few months, and always enjoy the listen, so here's my choice for this month...
- Until Death Overtakes Me - Missing off Prelude to Monolith (2003)
Thanks Sonny.
Thanks Ben. I agree wholeheartedly with your comments about funeral doom. It is one of my absolute favourite styles of metal and has some utterly sublime practitioners. But because it is based on fairly simple principles there are some very amateurish-sounding attempts at it. I think the true skill with funeral doom is taking these simple basics and producing music that feels profound and speaks to something deep inside the listener. I understand that it's not going to be for everyone, but I personally think it is one of the most affecting and personal of all metal genres.
I haven't listened to Until Death Overtakes Me before, so I'm looking forward to hearing this one.

Thanks Ben. I find myself that the playlists are great for when you are doing something else. I tend to listen when I am out with the dog or working in the garden. I actually find them really enjoyable to listen to because I don't feel the need to listen to them as intensely as the monthly features or review drafts where I need to make comment upon those releases. I do usually listen to the playlists from all my three clans at least once during the month though and quite often additional ones from the Horde, Guardians and Infinite.
I usually listen to the playlists while exercising & for very much the same reasons as Sonny has listed above. If I have the opportunity to actively focus on music then I'll usually do that with something I want to properly review but if I'm not given that opportunity then the playlists are where I turn.
Here's my submission for the December playlist Sonny:
Elder - "Gemini" (from "Dead Roots Stirring", 2011)
