Insomnium - One for Sorrow (2011)

I reckon I've listened to most of Insomnium's discography over the years, but never really dedicated the time to explore it well enough for a review. The Horde Review Draft gave me the opportunity to change that, so I took it with open arms. There is very little new in what this band do (it's easy to hear the influence of numerous other Scandinavian bands), but they work their craft in a very professional and palatable way. It's fairly accessible stuff, even with the brutal path that the vocals take on occasion, and the melodies consistently take priority over the more traditional death metal riffing. I have to admit that this particular album occasionally oversteps with this accessibility, particularly Through the Shadows, which I'm surprised to find is considered a highlight by many fans. Thankfully the teeth-grit-inducing clean vocal chorus, that comfortably make that track the worst on the album for me, isn't a sign of things to come. In fact, it's follow-up, Song of the Blackest Bird, makes up for it in no uncertain terms, containing fantastic death vocals and a heady mix of Dark Tranquillity and Amorphis. The rest of the album contains enough variety to keep things exciting, while rarely overstepping that personal accessibility tipping point.

I'm not at all surprised to find that Daniel gave this album 2.5 stars, as he's never been a big fan of Swedish (or Finnish) melodic death metal, and I can't see this album converting anyone that feels that way. As someone that's more than a little partial for this type of thing, One for Sorrow is a very solid and entertaining example, and one that I'll definitely return to from time to time. If you want a taster, check out the aforementioned Song of the Blackest Bird, Unsung or the epic Septic Flesh reminding closing title track.

4 stars

Another notable anniversary for me today, being the 30th for Fear Factory's debut album Soul of a New Machine. It was clearly outdone by the follow-up a few years later, but I listened to this album (which was initially in Daniel's CD collection but I think ended up in mine) a heap of times. I loved the industrial element along with the overall aggression. It's a still a nostalgic listen.

Both Messiah and Rob Lowe are exceptional vocalists with little to choose between them, but I think it is actually Messiah who defined the Candlemass sound vocally, with the help of their best material admittedly, so would place him above Rob within the context of this thread.

Incidentally, have you heard any of Messiah's albums outside of Candlemass? Both Mercy and Memento Mori have some great albums that should appeal to any Candlemass fan.

Quoted Sonny

I haven't. Sadly, the list of things I really should check out has grown to preposterous levels lately. I think I need to retire and take up listening to metal full time.

September 05, 2022 05:54 AM

Three Guardians 35th anniversaries on the same day!

September 05, 2022 01:25 AM

I honestly think Robert Lowe might top Messiah for me. His work for Solitude Aeturnus is second to none. I really should check out his Candlemass work!

You used to cane that record Daniel. Along with Poison, Guns 'n' Roses and Def Leppard. No need to be ashamed about it.

We've had this sort of request in the past and the solution is to add them to the site as Non-Metal. You can then submit the release to the Hall of Judgement. It will be added in the next few days.
September 04, 2022 08:41 PM

I don't think I've even heard the Candlemass albums with Thomas Vikström and Björn Flodkvist, so can't play along. I will say that I think all three vocalists making up your top 3 are outstanding, and I'd have to listen to all their albums back to back to make a decision. For one band to have all three of those doom legends involved is amazing!

Sorry Xephyr, but we're not adding Various Artists releases to Metal Academy at this point. I may review that decision at some point.

39. No Retreat (REVOLUTION)

40. Raubtier (SPHERE)

Glad you enjoyed it Vinny. For me, I think the biggest takeaways were Blackbraid (def need to listen to the full length), Strid (who I'd never heard before and was impressed) and that Panopticon track (I didn't realise the earlier material was more traditional black metal). Will spend more time with Grima too.

In short, yes. If there's no available data, or at least very little data, to help me allocate a genre or clan, then I will trust the requesting Metal Academy attendee's judgement. This occurs from time to time.

That said, I will always use RYM genre data when it is available. In other words, I won't accept requests from Metal Academy attendees to add a new release to a different genre / clan to what RYM users have voted, when there is adequate data available. That's what the Hall of Judgement is for.

I hope that makes sense.

August 31, 2022 09:29 PM

This is an easy pick for me. I'm very fond of Lunar Aurora's later albums (particularly Andacht, which is excellent), but have never ventured back to their pre-2004 work. As soon as I saw the draft, I was hoping this would still be available for third pick. :yum:

Over to you Xephyr.

August 31, 2022 09:25 PM

I'm very tempted to go for the Hate Eternal release, as I think the band is underrated, but given I'm already well acquainted with it, I've decided to select the Insomnium album. I'm sure I've heard all the Insomnium albums at some point, but have never spent enough time with them to review them.

August 31, 2022 09:21 PM

I'm picking the Solstice EP, as I've never heard it, and have enjoyed what I've heard from the band. Given I'm committing to 4 draft reviews, it's short running time will also be appreciated.

September 2022

1. Blackbraid - Barefoot Ghost Dance on Blood Soaked Soil (from Blackbraid I, 2022)

2. Antaeus - Gates to the Outside (from Blood Libels, 2006)

3. Alcest - Ecailles de lune, Pt. 2 (from Ecailles de lune, 2010) [Submitted by Daniel]

4. Saidan - I Am the Witch (from Onryo II: Her Spirit Eternal, 2022) [Submitted by Xephyr]

5. Sargeist - To Make Wolves of Men (from Death Veneration, 2019) [Submitted by Vinny]

6. Moonsorrow - Jumalten Aika (from Jumalten Aika, 2016)

7. Sühnopfer - Vikingligr veldi (from Offertoire, 2014)

8. Enslaved - Vetranott (from Vikingligr veldi, 1994) [Submitted by Daniel]

9. Denial of God - Funeral (from Death and the Beyond, 2012) [Submitted by Vinny]

10. Haunter - Overgrown With the Moss (from Discarnate Ails, 2022)

11. Profane Order - Frostbitten (from Slave Morality, 2019)

12. Grima - Giant's Eternal Sleep (from Frostbitten, 2022) [Submitted by Xephyr]

13. Strid - Nattvandring (from Strid, 1994)

14. Panopticon - Merkstave (from Collapse, 2009) [Submitted by Vinny]

15. Scarcity - V (from Aveilut, 2022)

As you know, I do actually have the ability to enter tracklistings and lyrics. Unfortunately there is only one of me, and I have a comparatively lazy brother.

I'll describe my process below so you know how I do things. That said, I'm more than happy to add bands on request, and will always prioritise them as much as I can.

I started off by adding every band to the site that had a release on RYM with 100 or more ratings. This took years to complete, but resulted in all the most important bands being added.

Once that was complete, knowing that newer releases naturally have more ratings than old ones, I started lowering the required numbers the further back I went. The below is where things stand right now, and it continues to get lower every few weeks. So to be clear, every band that has a 1990's release that has least 65 ratings has been added to the site. Every band that has a 1980's release that has at least 60 ratings has been added to the site. etc.

I reckon every band with a pre-2000 release with more than 50 ratings will be on the site around the end of September, and I'll continue to lower the numbers. I should point out though that it becomes very difficult to add releases when you start getting down to "the dregs". The integrity of the site relies on accurate genre tagging so that appropriate clans can be attributed to each release. I imagine I'll hit a point where it starts to become obvious that going any lower just won't be possible as genre-tagging will consistently be missing. That might be around the 20 mark, but could be lower. We'll have to wait and see.

As a final note, I've never intended for Metal Academy to have every metal release ever made on it. There are literally thousands (probably tens of thousands) of bands on RYM / Metal-Archives that have no releases with any ratings and that have no genres attributed to them whatsoever. It's just not going to be plausible to add them all here due to the clan nature of the site, and I personally think it will actually be better for their absence. Again, if someone requests that I add one of these bands, and can provide genre data for them, they will be added as a priority.

1970s - 50+

1980s - 60+

1990s - 65+

2000s - 75+

2010s - 85+

2020s - 95+

August 31, 2022 12:17 AM

Well, I've always known about this Aspid release, but never heard it. It's time to change that! Aspid - Кровоизлияние is locked in for pick 1.

Over to you Sonny for pick 2.

I guess I'll take the fourth Pit slot.  I can always hold off on the Pit challenge a little longer.

Quoted Rexorcist

Cool. As above, we'll make that draft out of 6.

Sorry to throw a wrench into this, just got home to check the site, but I could try doing a North one? I can just go last, doesn't bother me. It's been hard to think about music reviews lately so maybe something that forces me to be creative will help me with my writing process.

Quoted Xephyr

All good Xephyr! The more the merrier. I'll add you in, and we'll make that draft out of 6.

For the first drafts, let's allow drafters to select from the first 4 randomly generated releases. So if there are only 2 drafters for a clan, they still pick from 4 releases. If we end up with 5 or 6 drafters for a clan in future, we can allow the choice from 8 randomly generated releases. I think this allows us to reject releases we're already well acquainted with and also those releases that you couldn't make us listen to at gunpoint.

OK, the September Review Drafts look like this...

THE FALLEN (Ben, Sonny)

THE HORDE (Ben, Vinny)

THE NORTH (Ben, Sonny, Vinny)

THE PIT (Ben, Sonny, Vinny)

I'm going to use a random number generator to come up with initial draft orders for each clan, starting with The North and The Pit.

THE NORTH DRAFT ORDER

1. Sonny

2. Vinny

3. Ben (damn it!)

4. Xephyr (late entry)

THE PIT DRAFT ORDER

1. Ben

2. Sonny

3. Vinny

4. Rexorcist (late entry)

That means Vinny must get first pick of The Horde...

THE HORDE DRAFT ORDER

1. Vinny

2. Ben

...and I'll let Sonny get first pick of his beloved The Fallen

THE FALLEN DRAFT ORDER

1. Sonny

2. Ben

I'll start the drafts under their respective Clan forums. I think this is going to be fun. :yum:

As there is an overwhelming percentage of unrated releases on the site, after refreshing the page, starting with the first release, why not take the first four unrated (or unreviewed) releases that come up? This way we would all probably be hearing something new to us (which could become a previously undiscovered favourite) and it would also have the added benefit of expanding the number of releases that have been reviewed and rated. Just a thought...

Quoted Sonny

I'm not sure that's actually necessary, as the percentage of unrated vs rated on the site is huge. We'll end up with a full suite of unrated releases quite often I reckon. Plus there are so many rated releases that I haven't got around to rating / reviewing myself, so I'm actually keen to use my draft pick to do just that.

If the likes of Reign in Blood / Master of Puppets come up, we can always make a group decision at the time to ignore them.

I included a Blackbraid track on one of the playlist (Vinny's rec I think) and recall thinking it was good. Will have to check out the album at some point.

Sure. Paid on completion of the work though!

The obvious answer is Bull of Heaven, as it would be a radio station that could run almost eternally. They have 474 releases, with many of them having a running time that will last until the end of our universe and beyond.

Their album entitled 310: ΩΣPx0(2^18×5^18)p*k*k*k has a running time of 3,343,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years, which is 3.343 quindecillion years. I think that should do it. :yum:

I like that you're thinking about this stuff Rexorcist, but Daniel and I feel comfortable with the way things currently are with the Hall. That may change if we don't achieve a higher level of activity in the next year or so, but for now we're choosing to remain patient.

Let's turn our attention elsewhere. :yum:

I personally think 2022 has been a solid if not amazing year for the genre so far. There have been lots of interesting releases that I've enjoyed, with many of them not really sounding like other albums I've heard previously. Below is my top 10 so far, so maybe there's something for you to check out there?

  1. Scarcity - Aveilut
  2. White Ward - False Light
  3. Ultha - All That Has Never Been True
  4. Blut Aus Nord - Disharmonium - Undreamable Abysses
  5. Nocturnal Triumph - Nocturnal Triumph
  6. Det eviga leendet - Reverence
  7. Celeste - Assassine(s)
  8. Tómarúm - Ash in Realms of Stone Icons
  9. Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat
  10. Wiegedood - There's Always Blood at the End of the Road

While I'd also like to see the amount of Hall of Judgement entries lowering, I don't think we should force the issue by accepting less votes. There's no real urgency, and I think Metal Academy will be better for it if we wait for the required knowledgeable members to contribute in a natural way, rather than accepting a 2-1 or 3-2 vote when 1 of them is the submitter themselves. By having this sort of "event", I also think we'd be encouraging people to push judgements through without really understanding what they're voting for.

I have faith that if we continue to improve the site and make it more complete, the community will grow. With that in mind, if anyone ever has any ideas for how the site could be made better, we have a history of implementing a lot of community-raised ideas.

August 25, 2022 06:27 AM

But.... Grin is their best album! (hides to avoid immediate backlash)

Hi, Ben, could Chaos Control (JPN) be added?

Quoted Morpheus Kitami

Happy to do so, but they're not on RYM. Metal Archives has them listed as Power / Speed. Can you comment on whether that's accurate? In other words, should they be in both The Guardians and The Pit?

August 24, 2022 12:07 AM

I'm of the opinion that it's best to keep the amount of genres attached to releases to a minimum. For second or third genres to be attached to a release, they should be required to correctly attract the right audience. That's what genres are for after all. To let people that like release X know that they may also like release Y.

Metallica's first few albums are unquestionably thrash metal albums that sit very comfortably alongside all the other unquestionably thrash metal albums of the time. People that enjoy one thrash band are very likely to enjoy Metallica's early albums. Are there heavy metal influences on them? Sure there are! But attaching these albums to the same genre that bands like Iron Maiden, Dio and Accept belong to is, in my opinion, not really helpful.

It would also feel very wrong to see Master of Puppets on top of The Guardians chart here at Metal Academy.

But that's all just my opinion. Carry on!

August 19, 2022 06:02 AM

It's a hard question to answer but I'd suggest that almost my entire top ten would come from The Fallen. I don't think terms like "brutal" & "extreme" are the same thing as "heavy". To me that term is about suffocatingly thick down-tuned riffs that make your insides shake so subgenres like Drone Metal, Sludge Metal & Doom Metal would certainly feature fairly prominently in my list.

Quoted Daniel

Agreed.

Nice. Mine's not all that different from yours, although I need to check out that Funeral Orchestra album (and add it to the site!). One correction though; the wonderful Return to the Void is by Shape of Despair, not Swallow the Sun.

Here's my top 10 so far...

1. Shape of Despair - Return to the Void

2. Mournful Congregation - The Exuviae of Gods - Part 1

3. Mizmor & Thou - Myopia

4. Epitaphe - II

5. Messa - Close

6. Ataraxy - The Last Mirror

7. Tzompantli - Tlazcaltiliztli

8. Druid Lord - Relics of the Dead

9. Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard - The Harvest

10. Friends of Hell - Friends of Hell

Any suggestions for September Ben?

Quoted Sonny

When I first discovered Funeral Doom Metal in the early 2000s, I instantly fell in love with it. As is my tendency for any new discovery, I immediately threw myself into it and listened to pretty much every example of the genre to that point. There were some incredible finds (Shape of Despair, Esoteric, Skepticism etc.), but there were quite a few amateurish failed attempts too.

Then there was Until Death Overtakes Me's album Prelude to Monolith. This is a release for which the ingredients are not of a high quality, but the end result is somehow hypnotic and captivating. I go back to it every few months, and always enjoy the listen, so here's my choice for this month...

  • Until Death Overtakes Me - Missing off Prelude to Monolith (2003)

Thanks Sonny.

The North has go to be a wolf. I can't tell you how many North releases have a wolf on the cover.

August 12, 2022 01:17 PM

It would appear that you've copied my Big Four. Now who is the cheat?

Quoted Daniel

No I didn't! Your big four were...um...they were...shut up Daniel, or...or I'll tell mum!

August 12, 2022 11:00 AM

If we're going worldwide then my personal Big Four would be Slayer, Metallica, Kreator and Sepultura. Just missing out would be Megadeth, Testament and Coroner.

I've always found Exodus and Anthrax to be overrated. Just my opinion though.

August 12, 2022 10:55 AM

I disagree. I'd take "Spreading The Disease", "Among The Living" & even "Armed & Dangerous" over anything Testament has released. I've never considered Testament to be a tier one thrash band to be honest.

I'd have Sepultura in my Big Four ahead of Anthrax, Testament or Megadeth.

Quoted Daniel

Adding non-U.S. bands is blatantly cheating and you know it! :smirk:

It figures the metalheads there go for the most extreme music they can find.  In fact, if you search black metal on the recent year charts and only filter in studio albums, you'll occasionally get 25 pages of albums.  What's 25 times 40?

We're getting at least 1,000 new black metal albums every year.  That feels... obsessive.

Quoted Rexorcist

Imagine being someone that has to add all of those 1000 black metal albums to a website. You'd have to be crazy right?!

August 12, 2022 04:45 AM

Cool to see so many Testament albums reviewed here.  Way better than Anthrax ever were, nd it gets on my nerves that they made it to thrash's big four and Testament didn't.

Quoted Rexorcist

I 100% agree. In fact, along with Metallica and Slayer, Testament were for a long time one of my favourite bands. I owned all their albums on CD up until Low, by which point I was focussed on more extreme pastures. I still haven't listened to the band's last few releases, which is something I really should remedy.

August 11, 2022 09:10 PM

Welcome to the site Rexorcist and, more importantly, welcome to your chosen clans! I must admit that I'm a little intimidated by your electric eel, but we certainly welcome monstrous goat-angels here at the Academy.

Your 5 star Suffocation and Death ratings give me the feeling that we're going to get on just fine. If you have any questions about how things work around here, please don't hold back. We're always trying to improve the site and add cool new features, so if you have any ideas, we'd love to hear them  too.

I'll be seeing you in The Pit!

I'm going to suggest agreeing to disagree here, and let's keep Metal Academy as a place where we all respect each others opinions, even if we don't agree with them. By all means disagree, but do so in a nice manner. :yum:

Interesting! So it seems the correct review date is being recorded, as it's visible on the homepage Recent Review section...

...and when on the album's Release page.

But it seems that when you actually click through into the review itself (by selecting Read More), it's displaying the date the release was added to the site rather than the date the review was created. I'm sure we can get that fixed. Thanks for drawing my attention to it!
