Esoteric's 2018 opus, released eight years after previous album Paragon of Dissonance, is an absolute beast. It's nigh-on 100 minutes of funeral doom magnificence stood proudly atop the pile of a year that had been very kind to the world's doom metal fanatics. It kicks off in epic fashion with the 27 minute monster that is Descent, with it's breathtaking middle section that manages to represent perfectly the sensation of plummeting through the planetary atmosphere from a vast height.

Throughout the album Greg Chandler's vocals surge from a death metal growl that sounds like boulders splitting to desperate black metal howls as the music runs the gauntlet from ponderous, heaving funereal dirges through heavy death doom faster-paced passages to atmospheric ambient soundscapes. This is absolutely my idea of what modern funeral doom metal should sound like - all-consuming and soul-crushing metal that is as much experienced as listened to.

I managed to get a copy of the triple vinyl and I've got to say, it's a beauty of a release and one of my favourite vinyl packages.
