Track Of The Day - The Fallen Edition
As a recent atmospheric sludge fan, I can definitely have a blast with songs like this 10-minute epic:
An epic drone metal collaboration from Tokyo, Japan.
Just taken delivery of my vinyl copy of this superb album. The opening track is breathtaking:
Just discovered this drone/funeral doom outfit and their 2018 album, of which this track is the major proportion.
Funeral doom perfection:
Spectacular sludge metal from Washington's godfathers of the subgenre.
One of the more chilled tracks from Down's debut album. It's clearly a tribute to Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" but I can't help loving it.
An utterly sublime remake of a classic doom/death anthem from 1992.
An utterly sublime remake of a classic doom/death anthem from 1992.
True that! Both versions rule!!
This Philadelphia outfit has possibly delivered the best post-metal track I've ever heard in my life. For fans of Isis, Cult Of Luna & Pelican.

It sure is!! "Au Pays Natal", "Sol", both tracks combined, they're all the best I've heard in post-sludge!
That Rosetta album does remind me of Isis and Cult of Luna, especially a reminder for me to continue my album reviews for Cult of Luna and other bands. The song I'm gonna share is the epic finale of the last album I've reviewed before 18-day break from reviewing (more info about that here: https://metal.academy/forum/23/thread/620?page=1#topic_5230):
19 minutes of some of the most experimentally incredible music Cult of Luna has ever done:
If that "Vicarious Redemption" epic is one of the most incredible ones from Cult of Luna, it can't beat the epic that they've done with Julie Christmas. You gotta hear it to believe it!
Unbelievably downtrodden, disconsolate & emotionally engaging English doom metal for fans of 40 Watt Sun, Pallbearer & My Dying Bride.

No album better encapsulates the essence of doom metal than this, in my opinion.
My favourite album of all time right here...
Classic doom metal & a fitting way to end Cathedral's recorded career. This epic track pays clear tribute to Cathedral's early days but the lengthy four minute climax section sounds a lot like something Opeth might have done in a live environment in my opinion. For fans of Pentagram, early Trouble & Celtic Frost's doomier material.
A sludge metal masterpiece from before Isis became one of the gods of post-metal. For fans of Acid Bath, Old Man Gloom & Eyehategod.
Some well produced & very heavy Finnish doom metal for fans of Type O Negative, Crowbar & Triptykon.
Thrashy & aggressive US sludge metal from San Francisco. For fans of High On Fire, Torche & early Mastodon.
The perfect death-doom anthem for fans of bands like early Anathema, My Dying Bride, and the doomier Draconian:
While the KYPCK album does indeed sound influenced from Type O Negative, the song title "Christmas in Murmansk" reminded me of a lyric from this song I submitted as a special Halloween song for the October Fallen playlist but didn't make it in because its album Dead Again wasn't on Spotify ("Halloween in Heaven... Christmas in Hell!"):
Absolute killer track from a band new to me, South Carolina's Tar Hag:
Two killer bands I now enjoy, from the industrial sludge of Godflesh...
...to the Russian-sung Finnish sludgy doom of KYPCK:
Crushingly heavy drone metal from Arkansas, USA. For fans of Sunn O))).
