Cradle of Filth

When this band was hitting it big in the states I was a teenager. I remember liking "Nymphetamine", "From the Cradle to Enslave", and their cover of "Hallowed be thy Name". I also remember that they were quickly branded as mall-goth/Hot-Topic metal and that the metal community was pretty aggressive toward them.

I recently learned that they are coming to Pontiac MI just down the road, and are touring with Dying Fetus and Fleshgod Apocalypse so I decided to check out some more of their stuff, and I personally enjoy it. I was wondering where the modern black metal crowd is with the band. If perceptions had changed?

Those perceptions haven't really changed in the underground metal scene to be honest. Cradle of Filth certainly had their moments during the mid-to-late 1990's but there was a good decade or so when they seemed terribly water-down & disposable, almost a parody of the image they'd worked so hard to create. Some of their recent releases have been surprisingly decent but one gets the feeling that the damage had already been done as far as the band's credibility & lasting legacy is concerned.

I was fairly obsessed with them as a teenager but, as Daniel stated, they quickly turned into a parody of themselves. We saw them live about a decade back and they were underwhelming.

I guess I should check out their later releases which do appear to have received a better reception.

Yeah, I don't mind them too much and still like the debut album, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh, along with my personal favourite Middian and Nymphetamine is OK. I don't really think they have been classed as black metal for many a year now, gothic metal being the most usual tagging for them.
