The New Music Thread : The Horde Edition

French brutal death metallers Benighted have a brand tenth new album coming out on 19th April entitled "Ekbom". I'm partial to some of their records so I might need to check this one out.

Some more new releases for April:

Full of Hell - "Coagulated Bliss"

Pestilence - "Levels of Perception"

Deicide - "Banished By Sin"

I’ve seen Obituary live a couple of times & they’re always rock solid. This will definitely be worth a look.

The long-awaiting seventh full-length from US death metal stalwarts Necrophagia looks like it's finally going to see the light of day next month & is entitled "Moribundis Grim". With the possible exception of 2011's disappointing "Deathtrip 69" album, I usually find Necrophagia records to be worth a listen but don't feel that they've ever really commanded return visits. I'll no doubt give this one the once over at some point though, if only for old time's sake.

The brand new Six Feet Under record "Killing for Revenge" (unbelievably their eighteenth full-length) is due for release next month which doesn't excite my much. Everything they've done since their very solid 1995 debut album "Haunted" has been thoroughly disappointing so I can't see how this release is gonna change that.

I always enjoy these Maryland deathgrinders so I'm looking forward to investigating this recent live set.

San Diego slam death metallers Pathology have a new album coming out on 17th May. It's entitled "Unholy Descent" & is their twelfth full-length thus far. Their last two records have been pretty decent so I will no doubt be partaking in some of this stuff too. Who knows? Maybe it'll be a fucking banger like their 2012 classic "The Time of Great Purification".

I've always really enjoyed Dutch brutal death metallers Severe Torture but had kinda lost hope of ever hearing another release from them in the fourteen years since 2010's excellent "Slaughtered" album. Next month we finally see Severe Torture's long-awaited sixth full-length "Torn From the Jaws of Death" hitting the shelves though & I'll be sure to check it out at some point.

The brand new "Discontinued" fifth album from New York brutal/technical death metallers Malignancy hits the streets on 14th June. I really dug everything I've heard from these guys to date, particularly their 1999 debut album "Intrauterine Cannibalism" which was stellar, so I'll most certainly be indulging in this one at some point.

June 21, 2024 09:47 PM

Finland's Amorphis are releasing a live rendition of their classic 1994 melodic death metal sophomore album "Tales From the Thousand Lakes" in mid-July. I quite liked that record so I may have to check this one out at some point.

US brutal death metallers Disfiguring the Goddess have a couple of new collaborations out right now. The first is the "Transfigere" E.P. with Ohio goregrind solo artist Putrid Stu whose 2021 "Taking Care of Business is Our Business... and Business is Good" collaboration E.P. with Phoenix brutal death metallers Fluids I quite enjoyed.

The second is the "Breaking Fourth Wall" E.P. with Californian brostep producer Big Chocolate which admittedly sounds like an awful combination on paper but in reality this dude is the main member of disfiguring The Goddess anyway.

Disfiguring The Goddess are hardly a premier exponent of their craft with their back catalogue showcasing as many misses as hits in my experience but I have enjoyed some of their releases so who knows. This one might be one of the better ones like 2012's "Sleeper" E.P. which I really enjoyed.

Behemoth - "XXX Years ov Blasphemy" (2024) [Death/black metal from Poland]

Polish extreme metal giants BEHEMOTH have announced the release of their monumental anniversary concert "XXX Years Ov Blasphemy" which originally streamed online in 2021. The career-spanning show, held at and filmed on three different locations, has a total running time of 90 minutes, divided into three different acts. This very special set features fan favorites as well as a few selected deep cuts that BEHEMOTH had rarely played live before. For this event, BEHEMOTH went all in and took the concept of streaming shows during the pandemic to a whole new level, with a full production, incredibly detailed stage set-ups, breathtaking photography and a high-end sound recording. Way too good to only be seen or heard once, "XXX Years Ov Blasphemy" will now be officially released on October 25 as three-CD + Blu-ray, three-LP and digital album. As an appetizer, you can now watch the live video for the song "Cursed Angel Of Doom", which originally appeared on BEHEMOTH's first demo, "Endless Damnation", back in 1992.

BEHEMOTH frontman Adam "Nergal" Darski commented: "This project encompasses the BEHEMOTH mantra — connecting the ancients with the modern era by building a bridge through each decade. Join us in this celebration of black metal and unholy worship, as we continue to outlive Jesus Christ himself! We are delighted to put the spotlight on 'Cursed Angel Of Doom', the track that started it all. It signifies the beginning of an incredibly inspiring artistic journey that changed our lives forever. Legions — we hope you enjoy."

The new Blood Incantation documentary film.

Massacre - "Necrolution"

The fifth album from old school death metal heroes Massacre. I haven't enjoyed anything they've done since 1992's "Inhuman Condition" E.P. so I'm not holding out too much hope for this one. Will probably check it out for old time's sake anyway though.

November 01, 2024 09:37 PM

Full of Hell & Andrew Nolan - "Scraping the Divine"

This is a collaboration album between Maryland grindcore act Full of Hell & English post-industrial artist Andrew Nolan. Full of Hell's collab releases have been hit & miss over the years but I'm generally a fan of them so will be checking this one out at some point.

November 01, 2024 09:47 PM

Defeated Sanity - "Chronicles of Lunacy"

The brand-new seventh album from these German brutal/technical death metallers hits the streets later on this month & should be regarded as a must-listen for all The Horde members. They're always great & their last record (2020's "The Sanguinary Impetus") was a beauty so I have no doubt that this one will be too.

I have high hopes for this one after checking out the pre-release material. I'm especially impressed with the extremely precise, yet open, production job - perhaps my favorite from them so far. It thoroughly succeeds in presenting a wonderful canvas to Lille Gruber, who continues to lay out his creative & intelligently subversive ideas. I'd say a major hit is coming for all the percussion lovers out there.

Mefitis - "The Skorian // The Greyleer"

American wizards of twisted, melodic black/death return with their third full-length, to be released later this month. I'm a big fan of pretty much everything these fellas have put out so far, so I'm very excited to hear what they have in store for us this time. I'd suggest fans of The Chasm, Inanna, Adramelech & Alf Svensson era At the Gates should prepare their ears for a treat!

Will be out November 29th, on Profound Lore Records

There's a new Pestilence album coming out entitled "Portals" which the band says will be a "huge step forward both musically & lyrically".
