Cave Sermon's "Fabricate" and "Memory Spear" are death metal
I got through the previous three Cave Sermon releases before heading to their lauded 2024 release which I just started, and they're only tagged as post-metal. Ever hear people call Opeth death metal and think they aren't quite heavy enough for that? I feel like Cave Sermon are just heavy enough to qualify as dissonant death rather than as a post or prog band with some heavier riffs. There's some of that intrigue and technicality in the somewhat atmospheric and energetic riffs that I get early Extol vibes and occasional Convulsing vibes from. Anyway, this might be a "fine line" kind of thing, but they're just heavy enough for dissonant death for me.
Still, I admit that neither album is as heavy as the 2024.
