There are three notable anniversaries today, with Possessed's Seven Churches album (turning 35) being by far the most important. Generally considered the first official death metal album is a big deal in itself, but the fact that it's really great makes it doubly important.

So I guess today marks the 35th birthday of death metal, along with the anniversary of the origin of The Horde!

The two black metal albums having 25th anniversaries may pale in comparison (from an importance point of view), but I'm personally taking the opportunity to celebrate Summoning's Minas Morgul. It was the first Summoning release I owned (I traded for it with Daniel's girlfriend in 1995) and instantly loved it. They've become a huge band for me, despite my big brother's mockery.

An ex-girlfriend of mine owned a Summoning CD?? Well it’s pretty clear why we broke up now. It would never have worked. Although she’s clearly attempted to rectify the situation so there was some hope for her.

For the record, I'd like to clarify that my wife has never even considered procuring a Summoning release of any sort. This was one of the main things that attracted me to her.

Well, thinking about it now, I guess her taste should really have come into question.

Your disdain for the mighty Summoning will not go unpunished. May the infernal legions of Mordor vomit on your new Razor hoodie.

I'm quite amazed at how many metal releases have a half-decade anniversary today (17, including those 3 special albums from 25 & 35 years ago). October is clearly a special month for metal anniversary Fridays!
