2024 Metal Academy Awards Discussion - The Pit Edition
It's that time of year again i.e. the time when we start to think about which releases will be crowned as the pinnacle of their clans for the previous calendar year. I've opened this thread to house the discussions around our The Pit Clan Release of the 2024.
These are the 2024 releases that have gained the most attention from our members:
Dissimulator - "Lower Form Resistance"
Sovereign - "Altered Realities"
Critical Defiance - "The Search Won't Fall..."
Cavalera - "Schizophrenia"
Hemotoxin - "When Time Becomes Loss"
What other releases should our members be checking out?
Critical Defiance are my year end favoirites in The Pit and Sovereign were good too.
Pentagram Chile had a decent album out and Vulture's "Sentinels" was an enjoyable slab of speedy thrash.
I would suggest Mayhemic's "Toba" - only discovered it yesterday mind thanks to Sonny, but it is superb blackened thrash metal.

I would second that pick. I had forgotten about it because I haven't rated it yet.
Of the releases I've completed a full review for, the Hemotoxin record is currently in front followed by Cavalera's "Schizophrenia" & the Critical Defiance album. I haven't spent enough time with Mayhemic's "Toba" to fully understand where it should sit as yet but intend on changing that this month.
My three favourite thrash albums of 2024 were all hybrid records with the Horde: Dissimulator, Sovereign, and Hemotoxin. Everything else was painfully average or forgettable, with Critical Defiance being a massive letdown after No Life Forms.
The ones that topped my list were Dissimulator, Mayhemic, and Cavalera. I'm in agreement with Saxy that the Critical Defiance album didn't hold up for me even after all the chances I gave it.
The only left-field one I can conjure up is Vulture's Sentinels which is a more Speed/Heavy Metal album masquerading as a Thrash album that doesn't top the three I listed above but is a really fun album in its own right. Provides some variety, at least.
I was going to say the only thing I've heard was the new Nasty Savage, but I remembered I heard new band I Am the Intimidator, which absolutely amazing despite the batshit insane premise. Seriously, every single metal related thread on every forum I've been to has had someone praising the later, not bad considering their debut is basically just above a demo.
