From the 14-year-old guitarist to the third change in sound, Enslaved have been a highly entertaining band from day 1.  Having shown formidable prowess in traditional black, viking and prog, it was time for them to take the next step forward once Below the Lights came around.  It seems to me that this is an exercise in applying the vibes, structures and emotions one would get from either Tool or a band that takes after them, and applying them to a black metal construct with some atmosphere, some organized chaos and a strong sense of presence.  This is Enslaved evolved and it worked out beautifully for them.  The quirky and cool way they play in The Dead Stare is immediately followed by the heavily atmospheric The Crossing, and no qualms will be held.  And then we get into some flute-driven prog rock sounds like something out of a Jethro Tull album.  And this is all rooted in some wonderful compositions and some of their finest production.  So while this is a heavily bold move on their part, there's a strong sense of control and modesty about it that never attempts to shove itself in your face the way bands like Bathory and Destroyer 666 have done.  This might be a little lengthy on the first listen, but there are a plethora of different tricks played with care and subtlety, and they never feel out of place.  This is Enslaved purified.
