New RYM genre: Thall

For those curious about this subgenre, thall is apparently a blend of djent and metalcore that "utilizes rapid release bends and a precise playstyle while contrasting pitch-shifted high and low notes, with ambient sections for atmosphere and buildup." It was invented by Vildhjarta, and the name comes from their attempt at pronouncing the name of World of Warcraft character Thrall with a Swedish accent. Other bands who have taken on that style include Reflections and Humanity's Last Breath.

The question of this thread is, should this be a Metal Academy subgenre? It might be tough for me to answer, but I'm leaning towards "no". It's just one of those meme genres and the word itself doesn't have an exact meaning ("It can be whatever you want it to be"), and it's just one of RYM's pointless attempts at adding in a genre simply because it exists, not caring if it's legit. But if we do end up having thall added as a subgenre... Well, I'm not really the most experienced with the genre, having listened to only one album labelled thall and a few other songs of the genre. From what I've heard though, it's more of a djent subgenre with some metalcore elements, similar to how Periphery has some metalcore aspects while being mainly djent, so more likely just an Infinite subgenre in my opinion.

Anyway, I'm just saying my two cents here. Do any of you think thall would work as a subgenre in the site? Discuss!

The sound that people are calling "thall" is so clearly just a slight variation on djent that I see no real reason to consider it as it won't add much (if any) benefit for our members. My personal preference is to avoid dissecting our music into more & more silly pigeonholes wherever possible. The more we do it, the less variety there is in each subgenre for people to discover.

Metalcore djent, really?  It should only really be c onsidered a subgenre if it sounds THAT different.  But what with the name origin, this kinda does sound like a "silly pigeonhole."  I use "prog metalcore" as an easy descriptor on my charts, but if it's gonna convince me it's a legit genre, it really has to have a different presence that multiple bands can relate to, not a select few.  I imagine either way, even if Daniel thought this was legit, it would just be ignored anyway because it's one genre falling into two clans.

If it was a legit primary genre then we'd select the single clan that's the best fit for it (i.e. The Infinite in this case) as we've been down the path of dual clan genres before & it's far too messy.

It seems to me that as RYM splinters its genres down into smaller and smaller micro-genres, then the accuracy of its genre voting worsens. I much prefer the idea of reasonably broad genres with a unifying sound, but which still has variety within its scope.

I don't know about anyone else, but I really enjoy discovering more niche releases via members' lists. If I hear a release that ticks my boxes and I want to find more like it, I check out members' lists that feature it, some of which often highlight more specific genres or hybrids. For example, I remember checking out Yith ages ago and thinking, "hmm, black metal and doom metal combined is something I need more of" and lo and behold there were several lists featuring just that combination from which I found several future favourites.

So, I would much rather thall (dumbass name for a genre, nearly as dumb as screamo) remain under djent or whatever then if someone familiar with the genre were to make a list of its prime releases, everyone would be well-served.

I don't know what the hell "thall" is but the description sounds cancerous

Perhaps I just ignored it, but I never heard anyone mention this before finding this out today. Though I must admit I don't pay attention to djent or metalcore. Even so, I am mildly surprised that I was gone for a few days and suddenly there's a new genre.

That said, wasn't RYM supposed to have genres that aren't just made up random crap which might as well be what a band calls themselves? I remember that used to be a sticking point, but it seems whenever someone here brings up the site their sticking points disappear more and more. Like, I'm not saying things have to have Wikipedia pages, but it seems like this doesn't have much beyond the words of bands, who we don't trust to give themselves genres.
