Reviews list for Winterfylleth - The Dark Hereafter (2016)

The Dark Hereafter

Side one comprises three tracks of the pummelling, pounding atmospheric black metal we are familiar with from Winterfylleth's previous output - and very good it is too - for me, the best they've done since 2010's The Mercian Sphere. However, on side two the Mancunians try something a little different. Green Cathedral is a much slower affair than we are used to from the band, virtually doom metal, although Chris Naughton still employs his blackened vocal delivery. Then closer, Led Astray in the Forest Dark, is musically a more familiar abm affair, but utilising clean, almost medieval, gregorian chant-style vocals that makes for a very interesting listen. I don't know if Winterfylleth are signalling a slight change in style with this album or not, but on this evidence we need not fear for their future.
