Oh it's a rabbit hole for sure there's an entire gigantic iceberg chart dedicated to it:

Here's a huge list of bands from RYM made by a major member of the prog archives - extensive stuff

Note: I'll try to post bands here that fit under what I listed that I wanted to see more of - so I'll probably refrain from most well known avant garde black or death metal bands  cause I want to cover nicher and weirder bands (okay not the nichest cause I listed off some semi-well known weird alt metal bands but you get the point)
Note 2: if I post an avant garde death or black metal band I'll try to post the weirdest I can find that aren't just fusions of death/black and jazz

Okay so I noticed that people here mostly shared avant garde black metal bands but I wanted to highlight (not all of them cause I'm still on my journey) bands that imo represent avant garde metal on a more pure scale that isn't just an avant garde flavor of an existing scene, but that's a tough one because the closest bands to my definition that follow it are Mr Bungle, bands that are inspired by Mr Bungle (like Dog Fashion Disco), Diablo Swing Orchestra or pure weirdness like Sleepytime Gorilla museum (tbf Mr Bungle-esc bands are avant garde alt metal but I just think that avant garde metal first picks tend to be eather death or black).
Speaking of the Gorilla museum - I finally penetrated their weird sound and got their appeal. Their music sounds like an upcomming surrealist apocalypse of epic proprotions:

Oh thanks man I know the black metal industrial hybrids and Voivod. Corrections House is something I haven't heard of. I have seen Mechina on RYM and I almost finished Voivod's discography, but it'd be cool if there was a band that was like Skinny puppy if they played metal, but I failed to find it. At least I got that giant industrial iceberg and the supergroup Pigface to look forward to checking out, my backlog of music never ends ; )
