Review by Saxy S for Kanonenfieber - Soldatenschicksale (2026)

The period piece/novelty project Kanonenfieber return with a third full length album, Soldatenschicksale. Well, actually, the record is comprised of two new songs and and old EP re-recorded prior to the 2024 album, Die Urkatastrophe. One thing that I noticed was how much more intense the music has become over the years. The older tracks all have this figurative and literal feeling of doom around them; slower grooves and greater feelings of tonal whiplash. The first two, newer songs are more intense and relentless in their death and black metal pulse. 

Kanonenfieber's claim to fame has always been their storytelling. Specifically the tales of those who lost their lives during the great war of 1914-1918. So I was hesitant at first because my first thought went to war metal. Well war metal this is not. It still oozes of intensity and grit, like the sound of endless canon fire (see what I did there?) on the battlefield, but its also painfully melodic. The slower tempos that embrace the second half of the album recall the true toll that this war, and all other wars, bring to the people involved in it. I hope that Noise continues to explore down this path in the future. The death metal sounds of the most popular mid 2000s bands like Arch Enemy and Amon Amarth blend surprisingly well with Noise's familiar black metal palette.
