Review by Gator for Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (1986)
The album is called Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, and that is what it delivers. This is one of those reviews that is very hard for me to write because the album is so legendary that anyone who would be interested in it has probably already heard it. There is not much left in the way of fresh takes or revelations, but I will try nonetheless.
This is one of the most perfectly titled albums of all time, it promises music that is epic, dreary, and METAL, and it delivers on all of these promises to the fullest extent possible. This is literally the album that the sub-genre of Epic-doom metal takes it's name from, and like I said if you are here, you have probably already heard it, but lets pretend for a moment that you haven't. How would I describe it to you?
It is the audio equivalent of those dark and gritty animated movies from the late 70s and into the mid 80s; Wizards, The Secret of Nimh, The Flight of Dragons, Fire and Ice, The Last Unicorn etc. and like those movies it tells stories of immense fantasy, sadness, and darkness in way that enthralls the listener, and it has the class, polish, and high level of artistry that those films featured as well. Its some of the very best the medium has to offer, and if you haven't heard it you should put it on right now. It's a flawless album.
